The corporate owner of several local Las Vegas-area casinos says it plans to demolish three shuttered hotel towers and sell the properties that have been closed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020. Red Rock Resorts said Friday its Texas Station, Fiesta Rancho and Fiesta Henderson sites will be razed, although an ice rink at Fiesta Rancho will remain open. Station Casinos President Scott Kreeger says about one in three employees from those aging hotel-casinos today works at another Station Casinos property. The company owns several other properties that cater to local residents in North Las Vegas, Henderson and Las Vegas.

The U.S. Postal Service is celebrating the release of a new series of stamps honoring the traditional Mexican genre of mariachi. A ceremony celebrating the stamp's first day of issue was held Friday in New Mexico's largest city during the 30th annual Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque. The five colorful stamps were the creation of artist Rafael López, who lives and works in both San Diego and Mexico. Each stamp features an individual performer with their instrument. López says the beats and rhythms of Mariachi evolved in Mexico and are known around the globe. He says Latinos are proud to be able to share mariachi's special celebratory nature with other cultures.

Rock singer Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins says he'll perform a charity livestream show to benefit the victims of the the Fourth of July parade shooting in suburban Chicago that killed seven people and wounded more than 30. Corgan is a 20-year resident of Highland Park, where the shooting happened. He announced Thursday that the show will be held on July 27 at the city’s plant-based tea house Madame Zuzu’s, which he owns with his partner Chloe Mendel. He made the announcement Thursday in a video posted on the Madame Zuzu’s Instagram, the Daily Herald reported.
MINNEAPOLIS — A federal judge on Friday ended his investigation into information leaked to newspapers about secret grand jury proceedings against the officers involved in George Floyd's murder.
The Israeli military says Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired two rockets toward southern Israel, hours after U.S. President Joe Biden concluded a visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories. One of the rockets early Saturday was intercepted by aerial defenses and the other fell in an open area. There were no immediate reports of injuries. No Palestinian group claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, which activated warning sirens in the coastal city of Ashkelon and the surrounding area. Israel blames Hamas, the militant group ruling Gaza, for any violence emanating from the Palestinian enclave. Tension that soared in recent months has largely subdued in the run up and during Biden’s three-day trip.

An Indiana lawyer has emailed the state’s attorney general asking him to stop spreading false or misleading information about an Indianapolis doctor who performed an abortion in June on a 10-year-old rape victim from Ohio. Attorney Kathleen DeLaney sent a “cease and desist” letter Friday to Indiana Republican Attorney General Todd Rokita on behalf of obstetrician-gynecologist Caitlin Bernard, who performed the abortion on the girl. The letter says Rokita’s statements Wednesday on Fox News cast Bernard in a false light, allege misconduct and could incite violence. Kelly Stevenson, a spokesperson for Rokita's office, says he made “no misleading statements.”
Moroccan soldiers are joining firefighters in efforts to contain three wildfires in the north of the country. Several hundred residents were being evacuated from their homes as fires ravage large swaths of pine forests in the North African country. Efforts to put out the fires have been hampered by high temperatures and strong winds. Morocco's interior ministry said Friday that one person has died in the fires and more than 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) of forest have been destroyed.
