In the July issue, Insider talks to Paul Hollick,…

The chief executive of a Manchester-based percussion muscle therapy and recovery brand, has told how investment from two-time heavyweight champion of the world Anthony Joshua has taken the business to greater heights.

Paul McCabe is the chief executive of Pulseroll, which sells a range of recovery gadgets such as massage guns - with 50 Olympians, Premier League footballers, professional cricketers and rugby players among those that now use them.

Also a major investor in the company is boxer Anthony Joshua, who uses the products as part of his training regime and will be launching his own product in the next month. As part of the investment, last year, Joshua joined the company's board of directors in an advisory capacity.

Taking the business from the kitchen table and starting with £10,000 saved up from his other company, McCabe now oversees a company which is valued at £10m.

Olympic medal winners are amongst the sports people who now use the gadgets - and after setting his sights on getting Joshua, McCabe has a host of high profile investors on the cards.

His hope is to make the massage guns in particular as accessible as he can, as they help with circulation, posture and muscles issues

Speaking to Insider about the inspiration behind setting up the company, McCabe, said: "Pulseroll was born in August 2016 around six years ago.

"I'm 46 and have owned a business since I was 25 and still have an IT asset management business which I've had for 20 years.

"It's never grabbed my passion though and is just a business. As I was getting towards 40, I needed a strong Plan B."

McCabe attended a Chinese big innovation event, and as a big sporting person, he saw a prototype for a vibrating foam roller

From there, his idea was born and McCabe launched the UK's first vibrating foam roller. Today the company offers a number of vibrating massage devices retailing in some of the top retailers across the UK.

It was during a fight camp in 2016, that two time heavyweight champion of the world and Olympic gold medallist, Anthony Joshua OBE, was first introduced to muscle recovery technology when he met McCabe.

Joshua has been using Pulseroll's full range of vibration massage devices and since their first meeting, he has worked closely with his own medical team to fully understand the benefits of vibration therapy. Now he is rarely seen before or after training without the Pulseroll Mini Gun.

Joshua is of the firm belief that Pulseroll devices, and using them as part of his daily routine, has "significantly" improved his performance and recovery.

"The business has done really well and to have it set up and for Anthony Joshua to invest in it is a dream come true," said McCabe.

"When I first met him, Joshua came in with five or six people and I took three to four hours to befriend his team and at 10pm that day I met him walking past in his flip flops.

"I just said it was great to meet you and he saw what a good business opportunity there was and it went from there. He's very business savvy and has great connections."

McCabe believes Joshua's investment and use of the products has helped drive growth in the business. The multimillion-pound business has more than 25 retained staff and its products are stocked in excess of 20 countries including the Middle East and Spain amongst others.

"It's a total dream from where we started to where are now and having someone like Joshua on board clearly helps," he said.

"I think key drivers to our success are passion which I think is the most important one, a really good product, support and the right team credibility.

Looking ahead, he added: "We have seen rapid growth since I set Pulseroll up and the aim is for this to continue into the future."

Pulseroll is behind products including two sizes of massage gun, foam rollers and massage balls, with the devices used by British Rowing, British Gymnastics, Norwich City FC and Middlesex CCC.

At the start of the pandemic, it also produced an NHS Charities-branded massage gun and supplied doctors and nurses in Manchester with products to help relax and relieve tension on their breaks.

Ben Peppi, Mark Heppell and Stephen Taylor-Heath at JMW Solicitors, as well as David Orman at Hatch-House, worked on the Joshua deal.
